For the exercise to be most fruitful, though, students must do their best to understand the article as muchas possible, so when they convene in class, they can contribute tothe discussion. To help you get the most out of a scholarlyarticle, Dr. Becky Rosenberg, former Directorof the UWBTeaching and Learning Center andformer Director of the UWBWriting Center, haswritten the following guide to approaching a scholarly text. Use thisguide each time you read an academic text until it becomes secondnature. One of the keys to finding your way throughthe specialized and often dense texts produced by scholars isremembering that somewhere early in the text the writer needs to tellthe reader how his or her study contributes something original to thescholarship on the subject. It may be a correction of some pastmisunderstanding; it may be the inclusion of some consideration orvariable that previous researchers have missed; it may be applying atheory or concept in a new way or in a place it has not previouslybeen used. Make it your first goal to find that claim. Once you knowthat claim, you will be better able to understand the author'schoices, and better able to evaluate the effectiveness of theargument. Another key is that academic language issubtle, understated. Scholars rarely exhort readers adamantly toreject the lousy scholarship of those who came before and see thebrilliance of their fresh new positions. You therefore need to bevery attentive to small rhetorical signs like "but" and "although.

Not a heavy handed sell just an invitation to call me if a situation comes up where they or their clients need semething to do with tradeshow marketing. I find that a light touch for the sales end of what I do works: its inviting while not being pushy. Plus, its congruent with the purpose of my call: to network not to sell. The things I am getting out of ProActive Networking so far: turning those tweets and avatar photos into real human beings; and fostering more connections between all the people I know. Chances are Ill follow up these conversations with a quick card from my SendOutCards account to solidify the connection and maybe impress them, too. But what do I really get out of it?I get to know more people and I have found over the last seven years of being in exhibit sales I getting to know people and to help them get what they want. If I can do that effectively, then I can get what I want. QUESTIONS for you: What are you doing to network this year? Are you trying new things, new ways to reach people? Are you consciously and consistently looking to find new people?Id to see your comments!Disclosure: Im an affiliate of SendOutCards, the coolest ever online card sending service. Try it out here. I also work with SmartGuy. com to assist people to start their own online city based business networks that looks just like Salem Business Network.
